This week, we have been learning all about Hibernation. We found out that the word 'hibernate' means to have a long sleep. We discussed that some animals hibernate in Autumn because the temperature gets colder and there is less food to forage. We spoke about the different animals that hibernate, including hedgehogs, bats and dormice. We then explored the types of habitats they hibernate in. Using different natural materials, we then created our own hibernation homes. We thought carefully about which materials we could use to make them comfortable.
We read the story 'Don't Hog the Hedge' to develop our understanding of hibernation and the animals that hibernate. We then completed a sorting activity to apply the knowledge we had learnt. We cut out and stuck animals in groups, deciding whether they hibernate or not.
We have been getting creative this week by exploring resources and tools to create our own hedgehogs. We used different strokes with the forks to make spikes on our hedgehogs and used colouring pencils to add further details. We discussed our creations with our peers, thinking about where our hedgehogs would go to hibernate.
In Maths, we have been practising finding one more and one less than given numbers. We have become much more confident with our automatic recall of one more/one less, confidently counting forwards or backwards one from our starting number. We played ball games to develop our recall, showing good understanding of turn taking and teamwork - well done!
In writing, we have been continuing to practise our formation of the 'curly caterpillar' letters, ensuring our letters sit correctly on the line. Within our phonics writing, we have been writing Phase 2 CVC words, and some of us are challenging ourselves to write CCVC words, using the digraphs we have been learning! We becoming much more confident when segmenting to spell words.
