Plants
This week in science we have started our new topic Plants. We looked at what plants need to survive and grow. We then conducted an experiment where we planted seeds, some have a lack of space to grow, lack of air or lack of light and we will continue to observe how they grow.
Material Detectives
We had a great time looking for objects made from Materials we already knew to start our topic of Everyday Materials. We discovered there was LOTS of metal and plastic outside and more paper, cardboard and glass outside. Next week, we’ll look into their properties to discover why.
Plotting on a line graph
Today Year 5 have been learning how to draw a line graph using a range of data and even plotting more than one set of data onto the same graph. The children recalled how we have talked about using these to represent data from our experiments and the benefits of using this kind of graph. One boy…
Super Science!
This week, we started our brand new topic entitled ‘Living things and their habitats’. This week, Y4 learnt all about the different characteristics that make an organism living using the acronym MRS GREN to help us remember each of the seven criteria. We were then challenged to research our…
Height of babies as part of science
In science today we have looked at how babies grow and develop, two things we have focused on specifically are the height and weight changes from 0-12 months old. In order to represent our data we looked at using line and bar graphs to create a representation of given data, the children were able…
Dissecting plant parts
Life cycles of different animals
Today we have finished our topic of Living things and their habitats by looking at the life cycles of mammals, amphibians, insects and birds. We have discussed the similarities and differences between their life cycles, looking at aspects such as which of them undergo metamorphosis, which come…
Baking Gingerbread Men
We had previously gone on a trip to Lidl to buy our ingredients to make a Gingerbread man, as a group we then worked together to measure and mix the ingredients. It was important we used the scales and added the correct amount of ingredients to ensure the correct ratios. We read and followed the…
Superb Science!
This afternoon in Science, Y4 made drums out of classroom objects to investigate sound vibrations. We worked in groups and placed rice on our drums and observed to see how much the rice moved when tapping the drum with a different amount of fingers each time. This was a great way to explore the…
Learning about Jane Goodall
Today in Science we have learned about Jane Goodall, whose an animal scientist called a conservationist. Her work with chimpanzees has helped us learn many new things about chimpanzees such as the fact they eat meat and use tools. She discovered chimpanzees behaviour is similar to humans and had…
Butterfly life cycle
Wow! It was very exciting when we came into school and discovered that our caterpillars have now entered the next stage of their life cycle! They are in their cocoons and so we had to transfer them into the butterfly net. We talked about how long they might be in their cocoon for and realised that…
Super scientists!
Working as scientists, we set up various experiments around our classroom to see what plants really need in order to grow into healthy plants. We placed some cress seeds in sunlight, some in dark places, watered some and didn’t water some of the cress seeds. We’ll observe what happens to the…
