A brilliant week of learning in Dolphin Class!
Our morning sessions have been mostly taken up with our end of term assessments this week. These assessments help us to identify gaps in learning, which we can then use to plan for the next term's learning.
We did however, manage to squeeze in three English lessons, which saw us draft our diary entry. We used modal verbs and adverbs of possibility to begin with - we learnt that there are degrees of possibility within this skill - could indicating some possibility, but would shows more possibility. We also used commas after fronted adverbial phrases and parenthesis to add detail.
We also managed to complete some learning relating to adding and converting fractions in Maths this week. We investigated how 3 quarters and 6 quarters equals 9 quarters. We then converted this amount to a mixed number of 2 and one quartered (4+4+1). We then reversed the skill, subtracting fractions.
Our Science learning this week saw us investigate time zones. We learnt that the whole World is split into time zones that are in hour slots. We learnt that London is the point at which these time zones are measured from, due to the Greenwich mean line. Travelling to the right, time increases by an hour at a time, and to the lest, it reduces by one hour at a time. We investigated the reasons for this - looking at the rotation of the Earth and sunlight hours.
Our History learning this week has seen us continue our investigations relating to the building of Baghdad. We discussed how it became known as a place of wisdom, due to the development of universities there. We learnt that the ruler of the Byzantine empire gifted the Muslim empire many valuable books to help in the development of knowledge there. In return, they expected to gain knowledge from them, as it was learnt. We are finding the development of the city fascinating, and are looking forward to what occurs next!
Our Geography learning this week has seen us continue our Amazon rainforest study. We investigated biomes (areas of climate and landscape that are similar) this week and where they occur in the World. We learnt that the closer a biome is to the equator, the warmer it is. We discussed the Amazon's forest biome and why it is the most densely populated area on Earth, with over 200,000 different species in it! We discussed the layers within the rainforest and how they actually make four smaller environments for its population to live in.
