A brilliant week of learning in Dolphin Class!
In our English learning, we have begun a new text, 'Goodnight Mister Tom' by Michelle Magorian. We began the week by discussing the front and back covers of the book, making predictions based on evidence we could see - for example, we could see that one of the characters is wearing a cubed box, therefore we could predict the story would be set in the war, as it looks like a gas mask box. We then continued the week by immersing ourselves in the story, completing drama activities and completing summaries of the opening sections. We're really looking forward to continuing our text, discovering what happens to Willie and Tom!
Our maths learning this week has seen us discuss and learn about factor, prime and composite numbers.
We began the week learning how to identify prime numbers - learning that they are only divisible by themselves and one - for example 7 is a prime number, because you can only divide it by 7 and 1. We learnt that numbers that aren't prime have composite numbers which make them - for example the composite numbers of 6 are 2, 3 1 and 6 - 2 x 3 =6, etc. We have also learnt how to square and cube numbers this week. We learnt that squaring a number means to multiply it by its self once - 7 x 7 = 49, and cubing a number means to multiply it by its self twice - 5 x 5 x 5 = 125. In relation to this, we learnt that the squared symbol is a small 2 after the composite number, and the cubed symbol is a small 3.
Our Science learning this week has seen us investigate our new topic - Earth and Space. We discussed the theories relating to the Earth as a spherical object. We learnt that historically, people believed that the Earth was flat, and it was possible to sail over the edge of it! Ancient Greek scientist Pythagoras, however, observed ships sailing off in the horizon and realised that they were lowering into the water level, not just gradually getting smaller. His ideas began the investigations which eventually lead to the understanding of the Earth as a spherical object.
Our History and Geography learning this week has seen us showcase last half terms topics. We created information based posters to demonstrate our knowledge, using our creativity to influence our designs.
Have a lovely week,
Love from Dolphin Class. xxx
