This week we have come back to school with such a positive attitude and ready for new learning! We have well and truly settled into Year 2! To start the week off, Miss Cawley had a huge pumpkin for us to carve. We had brilliant discussions about farming and pumpkin carving.
In English we have began our new story 'The Owl Who Was Afraid of The Dark' by Jill Tomlinson. Before reading, we made a prediction based on the front cover and had some very creative ideas. We then listened to the story and created a class story map which will help us re-tell the story later in the term. After we had learned the story we took part in role play which we thoroughly enjoyed. We used freeze frames to show parts of the story and used our facial expressions to show the character's feelings.
At the end of the week we looked at word types (nouns, verbs and adjectives) as this was something we struggled to identify last half term. We sorted a range of words from the story correctly and some of us thought of our own.
In Maths we began our topic of Measure. We learned about what measure was, looking at things we can measure and thought about the equipment we might use to do so. As a class we came up with time, weight, length, height, temperature and capacity. We then went deeper into looking at length and height, using a ruler/metre stick to measure in centimetres and metres.
At the end of the week we applied our place value knowledge to order and compare different measurements using the greater than and less than symbols.
In Encompass we learned about the origins of Bonfire Night, which links to our topic of London. We read and role played the story of Guy Fawkes and his attempt to destroy the Houses of Parliament. We really enjoyed acting out the different parts and could re-tell the events securely, well done! We were able to put the events in order and discuss why we now celebrate Bonfire Night every year.
In Science we learned about dependency. This means when other organisms rely on others to survive. We looked at a variety of different animals and discussed how they rely on plants for shelter and food. We then looked at why plants needed animals, learning about seed dispersal and important gases they need to make their own food. It was a tricky lesson with some very scientific vocabulary but we worked really hard to understand.
